“A heartbreaking and horrifying horror from the author of Let the Right One In. Molly wakes her mother to go to the toilet. The campsite is strangely blank. The toilet block has gone. Everything else has gone too. This is a place with no sun. No god.
Just four families remain. Each has done something to bring them here – each denies they deserve it. Until they see what’s coming over the horizon, moving irrevocably towards them. Their worst mistake. Their darkest fear.
And for just one of them, their homecoming.
This gripping conceptual horror takes you deep into one of the most macabre and unique imaginations writing in the genre. On family, on children, Lindqvist writes in a way that tears the heart and twists the soul. I Am Behind You turns the world upside down and, disturbing, terrifying and shattering by turns, it will suck you in”
So what did I think of I am Behind You?
Mind-bogglingly creepy and horrific, emotional and heartbreaking in parts, downright strange from the very beginning and a complete head-scratching WTF ending! I loved this book. Thank-you to Olivia Mead at Quercus books for sending me this copy.
In my opinion, this is classic Scandinavian noir and if that’s your thing, this book will deliver. The character development is great and in particular, there was one character I just loved to hate! I suspect this book might be a bit of literary marmite for some, you will love it or hate it depending on how “clear cut” you like your endings to be. I loved it.
The only reason it fell short of 5 stars for me was the ending was so strange I think it completely went over my head in an “I need to read this again to make sense of it” kind of way. It’s hanging around in my thoughts for days as I try to figure it out, but I love a book that leaves that kind of aftertaste. I believe this is the first of a trilogy so perhaps the second book may provide some relief for my head scratching.
Overall great read! cant wait for the sequel!
