Being part of the book community on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube has thrown so many new and upcoming horror authors my way that it just blows my mind! I love scrawling through feeds, reviews, twitter convos and finding that little nugget hidden away in the corner of the internet where the masses will never find it. When I do find it, however, I want the world to know about it, share in it, buy it, read it so that the author can go on to publish many other amazing horror tales. There Are Monsters Here by Cameron Chaney is one such nugget.
I came across Cameron Chaney on YouTube via his channel and spent hours salivating at his mind-boggling collections of vintage horror paperbacks and an even more astounding collection of Barnes and Noble Leatherbound editions that gave me serious book envy. The guy is an honest to God book addict and horror fan – my favourite kind of people! So, of course, I had to check out some of his own writing, and I did!
As a debut novella, I was blown away by how beautifully poignant There Are Monsters Here was. The writing had style, the premise was creepy and despite the brevity of the story I really felt for the main character, not an easy task to achieve in a such a short read.
“Home is where the monsters are”
I also love the possible subtext depending on how you interpret the story. This could be a straightforward monster story or an allegory for how we all carry personal demons and must one day face up to them. Whichever camp you place yourself in when reading this, you will not be disappointed.
Can’t wait to see what else Chaney has up his sleeve!
If you don’t already, you should follow Cameron on all his social media haunts. He has some great book recommendations and I’ve gone on to buy and love some of the books reviewed and recommended by him. Look out for a post on that soon!
