Horror author Adam Nevill chats briefly with mamalovestoread

In a mega fan-girl moment I recently had the opportunity to shoot Adam Nevill, author of The Ritual, a quick-fire round of questions and he was happy to oblige with some answers. Here’s what he had to say…

mamalovestoread: From page one Under a Watchful Eye creeped me the hell out. Have you ever had the feeling you were being watched?

Adam Nevill: Thank you. Mission accomplished. And yes, while writing one scene in Last Days (in the Normandy farmhouse) I became sure that someone had entered the room and was standing behind my chair. Really freaked me out. I was certain I was not alone. I had two uncanny experiences while actually wring that novel.

Under A Watchful Eye is a supernatural thriller involving the sudden appearance of a dark figure that begins to stalk and torment the main character plunging his mind into a terrifying paranoia.          (Photo credit: mamalovestoread)

mamalovestoread: If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?

Adam Nevill: I fear I’d misbehave.

mamalovestoread: In a random turn of events, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 has become reality and all books are being burned. What’s the one book you would risk your life to save?

Adam Nevill: 1984.

mamalovestoread: What triggered your love of horror?

Adam Nevill: Having the ghost stories of M. R. James read to me when I was a boy.

mamalovestoread: The Ritual has now been made into a movie, how involved were you in the screenwriting adaptation?

Adam Nevill: I wasn’t involved in the writing of the script, or making of the film, besides some consultation on early drafts.

mamalovestoread: Finally, clearly, you’ve proven that your writing rocks! Do you have any hidden talents and if you weren’t a writer what would you be doing?

Adam Nevill: I’m a one trick pony, but I’d like to have a go at producing films in some capacity and think I’m all right at publishing books that interest me.

Thanks to Adam for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for me. His work will continue to be some of my favourite in the horror genre. Look out for some reviews of my Adam Nevill books coming to the blog soon.
